Basic Information (Rant #1)

Currently, Illinois is one of two states where having a concealed weapon is illegal. Wisconsin is the other, but it’s legal there to openly carry a weapon in public places. In Illinois, carrying a weapon at all outside of private residence is illegal. Not only is this a blatant violation of the second amendment, but it disarms the people who need the weapons for protection. One of the major reasons these laws exist is Chicago’s push to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals. This is understandable, but there is a major flaw with their logic. Weapon restrictions only keep law abiding citizens unarmed. Why would anyone think that people who already break the law would obtain their weapons legally? On a completely different note, legalizing concealed weapons is actually proven to lower the crime rate. According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report of 2007, states with right-to-carry laws had a 30 percent lower homicide rate, 46 percent lower robbery, 12 percent lower aggravated assault rate and a 22 percent lower overall violent crime rate than did states without such laws. Some people might argue that legalizing concealed weapons would let just about anyone carry a weapon. However, in states where it is legal to carry a concealed weapon, multiple training programs are required in order for any person to obtain a license to do so.
